1.
My life goes on in endless song Above earth´s lamentations, I hear a real, and a far-off hymn That hails a new creation. Through all the tumult and the strife I hear its music ringing, It sounds and echoes in my mind. How can I keep from singing? Although the tempest around me roars, I hear the truth, it liveth. And though the darkness 'round me close, Songs in the night it giveth. No storm can shake my inmost calm, While to that rock I´m clinging. Since love is born of earth and sky How can I keep from singing? When tyrants tremble in their fear And hear their death knell ringing, When friends rejoice both far and near How can I keep from singing? In prison cell and dungeon vile Our thoughts to them are winging, When friends by shame are undefiled How can I keep from singing?
2.
He leadeth me, O blessed thought O words with heavenly comfort wrought Whate'er I do, where'er I be Still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me He leadeth me, He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me Sometimes mid scenes of deepest gloom Sometimes where Eden's bowers bloom By waters still, over troubled sea Still 'tis His hand that leadeth me He leadeth me, He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me And when my task on earth is done When by thy grace the victory's won Even death's cold wave I will not flee Since thou in heaven leadeth me He leadeth me, He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me

Bright morning stars are rising Bright morning stars are rising Bright morning stars are rising Day is breaking In my soul Oh where are our dear mothers? Oh where are our dear mothers? They are down in the valley praying Day is breaking In my soul Oh where are our dear fathers? Oh where are our dear fathers? They've gone up to heaven shouting Day is breaking In my soul O day is breaking In my soul
4.
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide When other helpers fail and comforts flee Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away Change and decay in all around I see O Thou who changest not, abide with me
5.
While passing a garden I paused there to hear A voice of a stranger the planter was near I wept to behold him I asked him his name And he answered, "'Tis Jesus; from heaven I came" "I am the redeemer, for thee I must die The cup is most bitter, but cannot past by" His eyes, bright as diamonds, to heaven were raised While the angels stood wondering around him, amazed
6.
What wondrous love is this, O my soul! O my soul! What wondrous love is this! O my soul! What wondrous love is this! That caused the Lord of bliss! To bear that dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul! To bear that dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul! When I was sinking down, Sinking down, sinking down; When I was sinking down Sinking down When I was sinking down, Beneath God's righteous frown, Christ laid aside his crown For my soul, for my soul! Christ laid aside his crown For my soul! To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing; To God and to the Lamb, I will sing-- To God and to the Lamb, who is the great I AM, while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing! while millions join the theme, I will sing! And while from death I'm free, I'll sing on, I'll sing on, And while from death I'm free, I'll sing on. and while from death I'm free, I'll sing and joyful be, and through eternity I'll sing on, I'll sing on, and through eternity I'll sing on.
7.
I don't know about tomorrow I just live for day to day I don't borrow from its sunshine For its skies may turn to gray I don't worry 'bout the future For I know what Jesus said And today I'll walk beside him For he knows what is ahead Many things about tomorrow I don't seem to understand But I know who holds tomorrow And I know who holds my hand Every step is getting brighter As the golden stairs I climb Every burden's getting lighter Every cloud is silver lined There the sun is always shining There no tear will dim the eye At the ending of the rainbow Where the mountains touch the sky I don't know about tomorrow It may bring me poverty But the one who feeds the sparrow Is the one who stands by me Though my pathway may be broken Disappointments blur my mind Oh his presence goes before me As he guides me all the time Many things about tomorrow I don't seem to understand But I know who holds the future And I know who holds my hand
8.
Good friends now our meeting is over Good friends we must part And if I never see you anymore I’ll love you in my heart And we’ll land on the shore Yes we'll land on the shore We will land on the shore And be saved forever more Mothers now our meeting is over, Mother we must part And if I never see you anymore I’ll love you in my heart And we’ll land on the shore Yes we'll land on the shore We will land on the shore And be saved forever more Fathers now our meeting is over, Fathers we must part If I never see you anymore I will love you in my heart And we’ll land on the shore Yes we'll land on the shore We will land on the shore And be saved forever more O sisters now our meeting is over, Sisters we must part And if I never see you anymore I will love you in my heart And we’ll land on the shore Yes we'll land on the shore Land on the shore And be saved forever more Brothers now our meeting is over, Brothers we must part And if I never see you anymore I will love you in my heart We’ll land on shore We'll land on shore Land on the shore And be saved forever more Good friends now our meeting is over Good friends we must part And if I never see you anymore I’ll love you in my heart Land on shore We'll land on shore Land on the shore And be saved forever more Land on shore Yes we'll land on shore Land on the shore And be saved forever more And be saved forever more Will be saved forever more
9.
Tim Eriksen sings a hymn from from "The Sacred Harp" 1991 edition.
10.
Amazing grace How sweet the sound That saved a child of God like me I once was lost, but now I'm found Was blind, but now I see 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed My chains are gone I've been set free My God, my Savior has ransomed me And like a flood, His mercy rains Unending love, amazing grace

about

Real & Far Off Hymns Vol. 1 is the first installment in a series of benefit albums for Orein Arts, a not-for-profit arts organization with a mission to facilitate encounters between the artistic life and the spiritual life. The album is oriented towards artists helping artists: the proceeds will be donated directly to a scholarship fund that helps bring artists to the organization’s core program: a week-long creative arts residency at a monastery.

The hymn project began as a way to continue this mission remotely in pandemic conditions. Folk artists were invited to contribute a solo performance of a meaningful hymn from the tradition, broadly interpreted. The songs they gave in return were intimate, pared down and plaintive. This album goes far beyond the benefit album framework; it is an unlikely and beautiful offering to the world that arose from Orein's mission and community collaboration. We hope it can transcend cultural and musical categories and find a home in the hearts of many after such a trying time.
